DAYANAND SARASWATI

DAYANAND SARASWATI was one of the shining stars of the Indian Renaissance movement in the 19th century. His original name was Mulshankar.And he born on 12th February 1824 at tankara, Gujarat and died on 30th October 1883 at Ajmer, Rajasthan. And he was a great religious reformer of the time and attacked several evil. Dayanand also wrote the book called Satyarth Prakash Customs and traditions of Hindu Religion. He opposed idol worship and laid emphasis on the worship of formless God. And also looked towards the Vedas and pointed that many social evils and traditions were not present during the Vedic and times. These evil customs and traditions were later added and had degenerated the Hindu Religion. Dayanand was of the firm view that these evil social traditions and customs need to discard .But if Hindu religion again wants to gain supremacy in the world.

Saraswatiji was also highly criticized of the Christian missionary activities. And infused a feeling of self-respect and self-confidence among the Hindus for their culture and civilization. And also worked tirelessly for the social and religious reforms in India such as follows.

He opposed Purdah system
opposed child marriage.
He opposed Untouchability
He opposed female infanticide.
supported female education.
worked to get women equal status and respect in society

DAYANAND SARASWATI also worked for the national liberation cause and stressed on the SWARAJYA, SWADESHI, SWADARMA and SWABHASHA. Thus he was the first messenger of Swaraj. i.e. self- rule for the country. Saraswati had also worked in the education field .And he started DAYANAND Anglo-Vedic (DAV) school and colleges. Dayanand laid great emphasis on the education to clear out ignorance.

ARYA SAMAJ IN 1875

DAYANAND SARASWATI had founded the ARYA SAMAJ on 10th April 1875 in Bombay. The Arya Samaj criticised symbolism and dogmas associated with the religions. Arya Samaj condemns animal sacrifice, idol worship, meat eating, priest craft, pilgrimages, caste system and women discrimination etc.And the basic principles of Arya Samaj are as follows:

Infallibility of Vedas.

2 Result of idol worship.

3 One supreme God.

Equality of all Human beings.
Women Empowerment.

DAYANAND SARASWATI highly criticized the superstitions prevalent in India. He had termed Astrology as fraud and wanted to save people from it. Saraswatiji had written in Satyarth Prakash and “All alchemists magicians, sorcerers, wizards, separatists and etc are cheats.And all their practices should, looked upon as nothing but down right fraud. Young people should, well counseled against all these frauds in their very childhood, so that they may not suffer through being duped by any unprincipled person” DAYANAND‘s Theory of Non violence Modified:-

According to the him, punishments will be given to wrong doers and criminals to maintain a proper social order. Because if punishment is not given to the criminal then it amounts to the violence against the victim. Criminals will create chaos, if not punished. For exploiting the society and whole social order will collapse and Thus unlike GANDHIJI, Dayanand did not advocated absolute Non-violence. However in his personal life and he had forgiven many persons who had assaulted him. saraswatiji had even given supreme forgiveness to the cook who had mixed glass power in his milk causing his death.
